Terminology

The Quebec terminology database, Le grand dictionnaire terminologique, published by the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF), includes numerous French and English equivalents for common nanotechnology terms. If you need a nanotech term in another Romance language, the OQLF also offers the Pan-Latin Nanotechnology Vocabulary, published in 2009. This glossary includes equivalents in Catalan, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. The document is available online, and a paper version can be obtained by contacting Denis Godbout (denis.godbout@oqlf.gouv.qc.ca).

Standards and regulations

Canada, along with over 30 other countries, is actively participating in international standards development for nanotechnologies.

Research scientists, physicists, chemists, engineers, manufacturers, regulators, non-government organizations and an evolving base of users are developing science-based standards to build world markets for nanomaterials, nano-based components, and products.

Canadian Standards Association (CSA), accredited by Standards Council Canada (SCC), is the facilitator for Canada’s nanotechnology standards committee, the Nano CAC/CSC. This is a cohesive, country-wide national forum for discussion, input, and participation in international standards work.

In 2005, at the international standards level, Canada was named the convenor for one of four working groups of ISO/TC229, nanotechnologies:

- WG1, Terminology and Nomenclature, lead by Canada This is a highly visible role for Canada.

- WG2, Measurement and Characterization, convened by Japan

- WG3, Health, Safety and the Environment, convened by the United States,

- WG4, Material Specifications, convened by China.

The Electrotechnical Nanotechnologies committee, IEC/TC113 was also formed in 2006 for electronics matters.
